A Great Time to Be in Grayton
September 21, 2015 by Larry Pentel
The past 10 days or so have been just great on the beach in SoWal. Crystal clear water, the roads aren't clogged, and there is lots of room on the beach.
The Gulf has been calm right up on the beach but a hard Northeast breeze made it bumpy offshore a few days. No problem for us beach fisher folk this time of year. Plenty of fish to be caught within a couple miles of the beach!
Yesterday and today were slick almost all day so I got to run and hit a few spots that have been left alone for a while with great results. It's been nice to chase Red Snappers on the weekends and then target some of all the other critters that are available during the week. Any day it's calm is a great day to go fishing!
Here are a few of our catches from the past 10 days or so...
2 Dads and 2 Kids with a fun catch of Red Snapper, Scamp, Red Groupers and Mahi.
I grabbed a Buddy, the future son-in-law and my wife for a quick "first 6 fish in the boat" trip last weekend after running my charters. As always, Mary caught the biggest Snapper on her 1st drop.
A couple of my regulars and their buddies with a limit of nice Red Snappers, Kings and Mahi on this morning 4 hour trip.
Back to weekday fishing with a bunch of Vermillion Snappers and a Scamp grouper.
Some first time father/son fishermen on a blowy, windy day that kept us right up on the beach where it was calm... and it made for an exciting, productive trip.
An afternoon 3 hour trip with a pile of Vermillions, 4 Scamps and 1/2 a big Black Snapper.. there's Sharks in that there Gulf !
The next weekend morning trip with some BIG Red Snappers.. look at the size of that Black Snapper in the middle.
This couple has fished with me for years! They brought some other family along but wouldn't let them get in the picture.....I think they just asked 'em along so they could limit up and keep 4 more Snappers....... (I may pay for that one).
The weather forecast for the rest of this week looks just gorgeous! I won't be around to fish it though. My wife and I are going to visit our daughter who lives in Maine for a few days. It's a beautiful place too but I have never seen so much pretty water with NO fish in it.... oh well, lobsters are tasty and I'll be back fishing here next weekend again........ a change of scenery never hurts for a few days.
