Rapunzel, I?d honestly like to know what you construed as angry. You also said you disagree with me, but about what? That I find it hard to believe he?ll confront a sworn US enemy when he won?t confront his pastor and mentor? That racism should be detested equally, regardless of the color of skin of the orator? That we?ve been having open discussions about race for some time? Or that when a politician is forced to patronize to a constituency whose beliefs fall far from the mainstream, it hurts the politician when he attempts to appeal to the mainstream?

The Obamas gave 10% of their net income to charity. I, personally, think that is admirable and and not terribly common generosity.

Your taxes will only be raised if your income, after deductions, exceeds $200,000. I'm confused. You can't afford the same luxuries for your children that the non-charitable Obamas can, and are offended by remarks a woman who grew up very poor gave to a group of working class women, but your taxes are going up? I can't figure out how that works. :dunno:

In two of the years, the Obamas gave far less than 1% of their income (adjusted gross income) to charity; in three of the years, they gave around 1% of their income to charity. Only in the last two years have they given substantially more as their income skyrocketed -- 4.7% in 2005 and 6.1% in 2006. (Of course, it is possible that the Obamas may have made gifts to other worthy causes that were not deductible for federal income tax purposes.)

I'm offended that a woman of secure financial status would have the audacity to complain to a group of working class women about her own financial problems when those problems have to do with the fact that it is expensive to send her kids to summer camp. I'm willing to bet none of those women in the audience could ever send their kids to the type of summer camp that the Obama's send their kids to. It has nothing to do with me expect to say that I, like the vast majority of Americans, don't find summer camp a necessity. It is about priorities. Yet the Obama's set themselves up as champions for the poor. It all is very hypocritical.

Is it okay to stand up for our beliefs even when they are popular?

Can we not have integrity and popularity? Because believe me, the popularity waxes and wanes.

I've spent many years screaming in the wilderness when everyone disagreed with me and made fun of my lib-nut opposition to the splendid little war. Keep sticking up for what you believe in. You'll be in vogue again sooner or later.

Some ideas, among posters on this board, are more popular than others. But this is not the real world. We all know who is ahead in the polls. Time to get back to reality.

Raising taxes is a bad idea. Raising taxes on those making over $200,000 is not only a bad idea it is inherently unfair. If more money is going to the governement it translates into less money going into savings, investment, real estate, charity, etc. The economy slows and sooner or later the middle class will be negatively affected also.

Michelle Obama wasn't complaining, she was trying to build a rapport w/ her audience - Husbands complaining about their wives spending is a universal issue, not one dependent on your tax bracket.

CCK, I am confused by you criticizing the Obamas for not giving enough to charity (aka those in need), while at the same time complaining about monies being spent to provide higher education, basic health care, and child care to those who cannot afford it. :dunno:

The economy is not slowed/hurt by taxes as most investments in retirement funds, charitable donations etc. HELP your tax situation, not hurt it. Many people donate to charity etc. because of tax ADVANTAGES, not just out of the goodness of their hearts.

Republicans want to be in charge of their own money. That is what a free market is. Like I said, I will give, but it will be my decision. Entitlements should not be considered charity--they are two entirely different things. Whatever happened to working hard for something? In my opinion, the #1 reason why Obama is so popular among college students is because he has promised so many entitlements to a group of kids who have never learned to work hard. Their parents have paid for everything and now they're looking for a government handout. That is NOT charity. Sometimes you have to do without a nice car, big house, etc., to pay for health insurance and save for college. Some people do need help and I am compassionate, but I do not support all these new entitlements. The Medicaid Drug Plans have practically bankrupt the system.

And I'm not complaining about anything. I've simply said that if the Obama's are the champions for the poor, as they portray themselves to be, they should lead by example.

You are wrong that taxes don't have an affect on the economy. The people that are hardest hit by taxes are those who own businesses and employ other people. Higher taxes slow economic growth. Unless you are a government employee (and I don't mean this personally). The government will grow and create new jobs with new programs and entitlements.[/B]
