This New Yorker article says it far better than I could:

"What is truly disturbing is the game Trump has been participating in, the conspiracy thinking he was playing with. And here the polls—to the extent that they can be taken as hard fact—tell a disturbing story, in which no small part of the country has believed in a variety of tales about Barack Obama. There is the birther fantasy; the fantasy that Bill Ayers wrote “Dreams from My Father”; the fantasy that the President has some other father, and not Barack Obama, Sr.; the fantasy that Obama got into Harvard Law School with the help of a Saudi prince and the Nation of Islam. There is a veritable fantasy industry at work online and in the book-publishing industry; there are dollars to be made.

The cynicism of the purveyors of these fantasies is that they know very well what they are playing at, the prejudices they are fanning: that Obama is foreign, a fake, incapable of writing a book, incapable of intellectual achievement. Let’s say what is plainly true (and what the President himself is reluctant to say): these rumors, this industry of fantasy, are designed to arouse a fear of the Other, of an African-American man with a white American mother and a black Kenyan father. Obama, as a politician, is clearly not a radical; he is a center-left pragmatist. If anything, he believes deeply in his capacity to lead with subtle diplomacy and political maneuvering, with a highly realistic sense of the possible; in fact, to many he is maddeningly pragmatic.

The one radical thing about Barack Obama is his race, his name. Of course, there is nothing innately radical about being black or having Hussein as middle name; what is radical is that he has those attributes and is sitting in the Oval Office. And even now, more than two years after the fact, this is deeply disturbing to many people, and, at the same time, the easiest way to arouse visceral opposition to him. Let’s be even plainer: to do what Trump has done (and he is only the latest and loudest and most spectacularly hirsute) is a conscious form of race-baiting, of fear-mongering. And if that makes Donald Trump proud, then what does that say for him? Perhaps now he will go away, satisfied that this passage has sufficiently restored his fame quotient and television ratings. The shame is that there are still many more around who, in the name of truth-telling, are prepared to pump the atmosphere full of poison."

It wasn't that long ago that blacks in the South had to take a literacy test to be able to vote. Or to be able to vote they had to show that their grandfather had voted (origin of "grandfathering").
Maybe he thought it was no longer appropriate for a black man to have to go to lengths not required of others to prove his eligibility for anything.

That could have a lot to do with it. It bothers me that anyone would think Obama had some sort of "obligation" to release the long form just to "satisfy a certain segment of the population" after he had met the proper proof of birth requirements long ago. These fringe members of society are never going to be satisfied and deserve all the scorn and ridicule one can muster.

Donald Trump's "run for president" & "birtherism" are cynical ploys designed to enhance his ego, ratings for his TV show & his net worth. He has bet on the naiveté & gullibility of the American public & has "won," at least by his own standards.

Candidate Obama complied with the legal requirements in the first place. (go to factcheck.org > FactCheck.org: Born in the U.S.A.) Maybe he considered it demeaning (as it was meant to be) to have to go beyond the law to prove that he is an American. Maybe he figured opponents would ask next to see documentary evidence that he wasn’t a Muslim. Or maybe, he is simply stubborn. I don’t know. (did anyone read about Graham's speech on EASTER SUNDAY?? > WH berates religious leader over birth comments - Politics - msnbc.com)

What matters is that the President of the United States had to ask for a waiver of Hawaiian law to prove he is who he is to people who couldn’t accept the facts, without extraordinary measures. I’m glad this issue may be laid to rest. But it’s a sad day for this country when the office of the president — the first African-American to occupy that office — has to capitulate to ludicrous demands to prove he is an American.

THANK YOU GIDGET !

very well stated.... unbelievable that he would have to go beyond what others do to satisfied people who were leery of his name, father, color or who knows what ....

I'd say it's pretty obvious his campaign felt it was hurting his numbers so they decided to release it. Clearly they've had it all along, they only now felt they needed to try and push the issue out of the media spot light. They didn't make that choice randomly.

I'm standing behind the fact that there should never have been any controversy over his origins. Now from you, let's hear the birther argument that you have so staunchly defended.

You're right, and if his campaign had handled the issue more deftly, it wouldn't have been. They opened the door for media types like Trump to exploit the issue. Now after all this craziness they finally released the real thing. Clearly they were concerned about the impact the subject was having.

Afterbirthers Demand To See Obama's Placenta | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

"All we are asking is that the president produce a sample of his fetal membranes and vessels—preferably along with a photo of the crowning and delivery—and this will all be over," said former presidential candidate and Afterbirthers spokesman Alan Keyes, later adding that his organization would be willing to settle for a half-liter of maternal cord plasma."

This is where your ignorance shines like a beacon. The real thing was released a long time ago. You are complicit in the harrassment that our president has been subjected to on this issue.
