Captain's Holiday

January 20, 2015 by Larry Pentel

After a bit of a rough and blowy start to the new year we have had some fantastic weather here at the beach the past several days. I did something I have never done before and turned down trips during the calm pattern this weekend so I could take off and attend the 30A Songwriters Festival here in SoWal.

This was the 6th year and every other year my wife and I have had tickets but I have fished and not been able to make most of the shows. While I hate missing nice days in the middle of winter on the water it sure was nice to kick back in a beach chair and catch some great acts the past few days!

Prior to "going on vacation" I got to run a couple trips on some days calm enough to get out where ever I wanted. Both trips were locals and we had great catches on each occasion. We filled the box up with lesser jacks and vermilions on a freezer trip.

Lots of Fish to clean!

I took some of my hard core regular folks out that always want a big fish so we ran about 20 miles out and found the BIG Jacks biting fast and furious. We released a bunch, some by accident and some intentionally but kept our limit that yielded almost 100# of fillets.

Big ole slabs of AJ fillets.

My wife and I are taking off for two weeks to drag the camper along Southwest Florida and go places we haven't been before. I love getting to play tourist every now and then being on the side of the coin. No fishing reports from Grayton and the DeadFish for few weeks I'm afraid. I'm sure as soon as I get back I'll have an update on what's biting hot.
