Are there any "good" politicians? If there is I guess I have just lost "faith". I might agree that a few have "good" intentions but I believe the definition of a "politician" is, "any individual who has either compromised their morals and ethics (or had none to begin with) in order to finance and manipulate their campaign into public office." My definition has no party boundaries.

We as a "society" have a duty to provide a collective voice to provide the checks and balances necessary for the "good" of society as polticians tend to be more self serving by nature. Sowal is a great forum for the great debate on how to achieve, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"...

we need more people to participate and even more to pay attention to what's going on...because unfortunately, I think you are right...the day of the "statesman/woman" appears to be gone.

There are some, but they rarely get elected and the deck is stacked against them if they do.

I cast my ballot for a good person last fall - they were defeated by someone who got 90% of their funding from outside the district.

Definitely!

IMO the way the system is currently set up GUARANTEES that we get "politicians" instead of "statesman."

My mother made me promise never to run for political office because of how nasty it is.

If you look at the statistics, most of the painkillers are coming from clinics that are unregulated. Scott's clinic is regulated because they take insurance and they don't take Medicare, but are associated with Medicaid HMO's, (not sure how that works ) but, most of his customers at his clinic pay cash. Also, a large chunk of them are coming for pre-screening drug tests to make sure they'll pass the employment tinkle test. It's not difficult to do the math on this one.

So, instead, he goes and announces that they will be doing a crack down on illegal drugs, including prescription drugs, at the tune of $800,000 to pay for overtime for the police officers. Look at the stats on that page, 97 of the top 100 doctors nationwide who are prescribing the most painkillers nationwide are from Florida. However, the police can't really touch the doctors who write them because they are affiliated with privately owned clinics of which they have no ownership, so therefore, they can't really be touched legally because the clinic instructed them to do such.

What a nitwit.

Rick Scott knows his way around healthcare as it relates to "profit". He did get rich somewhere. He kind of has a chip on his shoulders regarding the way his leadership ended as a CEO. It sounds like his clinics are structured to take full advantage of this knowledge in how it all works. Cash is king and followed by medicaid reimbursement believe it or not. Both are very profitable. Now that he is governator and self serving, everything on his agenda will be to serve the profit interests in his clinics or to manipulate his political power either for advancement or payback. My guess is payback to all those rival hospitals that held him in check by winning CON applications or those who did not support him (apparently state workers and teachers). He may go after small business next...
