Make sure you put a SoWal sticker nearby with instructions to log in for technical or non-technical help.

Thanks, SJ. For putting the router next to the other cottage, does the router need to be next to a cable "outlet" since mediacom is doing this. Or can the router be somewhere else? There's no cable "outlet" on the walls between the two cottages.

Is the 8mgs worth getting over 250K for $25 more each month?

Regarding the 8mgs question, I don't know, MediaCON never gave me an option of speeds, but the one I had was fast. I think the normal price was around $45 per month, with a package teaser price of $33 per mo.

Addressing the first question, yes, the wireless router will have to connect to your cable modem, which will likely be near your cable "outlet" and tv. If you don't have an option of locations, I wouldn't worry too much because as I mentioned, you will probably still have good wireless coverage in the adjacent house due to the close proximity. I would guess that all of the pool front homes would be able to pick up your wireless signal.

That sounds like the Alltel people telling me to log onto www... to set up an internet service connection which I couldn't get.

Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
There are probably several available networks at the Cottages - CCK?

Not that are open access. There's one in a cottage right next door to one of mine that is sometimes available. The rest (maybe 3-4) are password protected.

Kurt, can you answer the question about 8 mb or 240k for speed? Getting 240K speed would be about $25 cheaper per month. Is that plenty of speed for most people? Frankly, I assume people will be checking email and ideally not doing big projects anyway.

Maybe someday the Cottages at Camp Creek as an association will get wireless at a special rate for owners?

thanks.

That's the beauty of open networks -- only one charge of $50 per month for internet access, yet in highly dense areas, it would service many homes/people. I believe the cable people refer to this as stealing, but if you were picking up an open network, I guess you could file charges of trespass of air rights (but probably not against the cable company, just the person with the open network. I think as cable companies loose business to high speed wireless technology and open access links in towns, the cable companies will either go out of business or start filing charges of theft of cable, or perhaps both.

I think the lower speed would be fine if it is as advertised.

Maybe SoWal should have free and open wireless access for everyone.
