I'm with Scooter on the driving issue - especially if my destination is South Florida. I despise the Atlanta Airport (sorry singinchicken - that big-azz escalator gives me panic attacks).

I missed the part about the new limits. As far as I knew, that had not changed. It's the inconsistent application that breeds trouble. If you keep getting the free ride, ya kinda get used to it and, then, wham!

Putting it in a seat is always an option at whatever price that seat happens to be going for...

Mr. JR and the boy even tried that at the last minute. As long as we were having to pay big bucks we figured we should go ahead and buy the seat. But they were full.

I called Delta later, talked with someone then asked to be transferred to his supervisor. I complained that this newest limitation measurement was not posted on their website. (I buy all our tickets online.) They said not ALL musical instrument restrictions are listed online! Is that crazy or what??? Oh well, we are learning as we go along. And with all the airlines up in the air (no pun intended) with the possibility of bankruptcy, one never knows what might happen next. Expect the unexpected!

It may never happen to us again, but then again, it very well could!

Slight tangent - I need to buy a ticket soon for a wedding - what happens if the carrier goes bankrupt after I buy it or during my trip? :dunno:

Buy it with a credit card, and you are safe. If another airline does not accomodate the travellers, you can go back throught the CC company and reverse the charges.

Even if I've already paid the card off a month or 2 before? :dunno:

It's possible. I had a dispute with a charge for future services made on a card over six months prior ($1500). I first tried to work it out with the vendor (documenting my trials and tribulations of course)...when I got nowhere with the vendor, I contacted Visa with my tale of woe.

Although it is true that they really didn't have to help me out...due to the time limitations...they approved my dispute, charged back my credit card for the full amount and forwarded my dispute paperwork. In the end, the company backed down. Of course it helps to be a "member in good standing" with the Visa company and able to back up your story of trying to work in good faith with the vendor. If you're a louch, late or overdrawn on your card, or only charge $5 now and again, I don't think they'd be as accommodating.

(BTW, which airline are you planning on booking with?)

Probably either AA or Continental depending on prices - they fly there, but are also most likely to go belly up!

Another ? - if I book through Expedia etc. instead of directly w/ airline does it change the scenario?

It may as they broker unused seats. I'm sure there is a help number with Expedia that could answer that question...

Continental isn't in a bad shape as AA...which really isn't saying much. But, even if an airline does file bankruptcy, business still goes on. I don't think you should fret in the short-term of buying a seat to fly (although you still might be shuffled about up until flighttime--but that's happening on all airlines, regardless).

Now, if you're asking about investing in airline stock...that's a whole other thread.
