Today, even the cheap tv's have pretty good pictures. I bet you could find flat panel replacements at a big box store for less than $200 for the 17", especially now with Christmas or Day after Christmas sales. I'd guess that the 42" will be a bit pricier, closer to $600. The flip side is getting a repairman to show up will cost at least $100 for them to do nothing to it. Add another hour labor and then $$ for parts, and you will still have an old TV. I'm not familiar with the lamps on the TV's and it may be an easy fix as nowgirl says. Google "problem tv plasma" and "problem tv lcd" and do a bit of reading. You might take on the challenge yourself.
John R gave me 2 sources to try but I'm soooo over these dang flat screens. Short of a Bang and olusen, I don't know if any of them are any good. Haven't tried those search terms so will give it a try. I did check ebay and found oodles of "as is " plasmas with the same problem. Some article said they should have a 10 year life but you should cut that in half. I haven't even come close to that. The last one I had was a samsung. I sold it with the condo when it was 8 months old. Magnavox LCD screen went bad in less than 2 years. Vizio Plasma HD screen went bad in just over 2 years. If i have to get a new TV, I'm really rethinking the whole LCD/Plasma. $2500 for 2 years of use is crazy.
Must be that time of the year! I have a year old 40" Samsung LCD that did the same thing last weekend. After letting it sit for a day, it has worked without a problem. I contacted Samsung and they referred me to:

Seems to be a privilent issue with these new "high tech" televisions.
Prior to my new tech tele, I had a 20 year old 27" Curtis Mathis. NEVER one problem....ugh...gotta luv technology....![]()
I'd be thrilled if it turned on tomorrow but had it off for several hours and turned on again and still nothing. The little one turns on for about an hour and then goes black. Wanna sell your Curtis mathis? ;-)
I have an LCD...it is only 6 months old....How long should I expect it to last... it is an LG...it looks good!
My TV's are on all day long and even sleep with it on, so I'm an especially heavy user. I'm home all day long so I leave them on for background noise. Need to learn to start turning them off when i go upstairs and vice versa and maybe buy a stereo instead of using the music channels on the TV cause i really don't watch it more than a couple of hours a day. This is certainly a costly lesson about leaving them running. Just wish it would have waited till after the holidays. Will let you know what I find out.
