Butter is one year old today. No party, because half his playmates are dogs and half are cats...probably wouldn't work out. Also, rain, rain, rain today. But Butter had his breakfast wrapped in the paper towel that microwaved the bacon, followed by overtime fetch action and treats, and will have an indoor romp with his best friend, Louie this afternoon. Oh, yes...a giant-sized Greenie tonight! Happy birthday to Butter, who makes us smile every single day. (See my photo gallery for Butter.) Is there anything worse than empty nesters with a small dog? Probably not.

Happy Birthday Butter! I am an empty nester without a dog or a cat. I have thought about it but am just on the go too much. Will have to wait until the next phase of life.

Birthday Poem from the Dog

You feed me when I'm hungry,
you keep water in my dish,
you let me sleep on anything,
or anyplace I wish.

You sometimes let me lick your hands,
or even lick your face,
despite the fact I've licked myself,
in every private place.

You taught me how to come when called,
you taught me how to sit,
you always let me go outside,
so I can take a . . . . stroll.

I've been with you through oh, so much,
through laughter and through tears,
I hope you live to be a hundred,
that's 700 in doggy years.

Happy Happy Birthday to Butter. He has a good life and his pic is SO sweet.
For me the only thing worse than being an emptynester with a dog, is to have an empty nest without one. They always love the attention...mine especially enjoy having me sing to them....yeah too much free time.

Thanks, everyone for Butter's birthday wishes. It was fun seeing the dog pics, too. We want to clone John! Butter had quite a day. Three of his doggie friends (and owners) brought little gifts and one stayed for a play date. He had extra treats.

The coup was that Butter had his first chocolate. We have never allowed him people food, especially chocolate, which can be toxic to small dogs in quantities. :banned: I had a Fran's dark chocolate-dipped soft caramel topped with coarse sea salt on a side table in our family room, waiting for it to reach room temp. Butter, who loves salt but doesn't get any, quietly lifted the chocolate in its little fluted paper and absconded to his quilt. When I couldn't find the chocolate, I spied the paper on the quilt. Fortunately, aside from chocolatey, caramelly breath for the rest of the day, no harm was done. Having a puppy is like having a baby in the house, only they are sneakier.

Yes, they are sneaky. They know that they are not supposed ot have people food. That story reminds me of the time my daughter had to make a pie graph for a math class, and she chose to chart the types of candy people liked. She had glued a variety of candies to her poster board and left it to dry on her bedroom floor. The next morning she was quite upset as Maggie, our bichon, had carefully unwrapped the candy and ate it. All that was left was the candy wrapper glued to the poster board. I had a good laugh and told her to tell her teacher the truth, the dog ate her homework. I was always amazed how the dog did not disturb the paper. By the way Maggie's candy preferences were suckers and gum.
