I did get an e-mail from Sharon asking for particulars, which I sent, but have not had a reply again.

Same old quandary

I'm reviving this thread to see if there is any new light,
as I (once AGAIN) seek viable alternatives to Mediacom.

I've stayed with Mediacom for years since it always seems to boil down to the lesser of all the evils. I suppose my "longevity" is part of the problem. My bill goes up-up-up while channel selection goes down-down- down (basic & family). While MCC offers incredible new customer sign-on deals (Ray's $5 hi-speed internet offer versus mine just increasing to $47) but the "customer retention" plan options are pathetic little bones. One sided loyalty.

I'm not sure if Century Link / Dish Network / Satellite is even a viable option as my 1 story house is surrounded by large trees on 4 sides ... thus southern exposure is severely limited.

Significant weather (& other mysterious?) related service inconsistencies also sound inherent with satellite? If so... doesn't that kind of screw you during hurricanes... just when you need news the most?

All providers seem to insist on 1-2 year contracts to receive the most compelling rate. That SUX!!

I'm not conversant in tech lingo and this dilemma is (once :bang: again) giving me a raging red headache.

Any news or advice out there?

I also live in a 1 story house surrounded by large trees. The first time I had the Dish installer out, he said there was no way. A year or two later I got in a conversation with a Dish installer at the Tom Thumb - he came over to my house and found several places to get a line of sight to the satellite, said the first installer was just lazy. It isn't directly south, more like southwest, by the way. I've had Dish for about a year now and so far I am very happy. The only time it goes out is when there is heavy rain, like a gully washer thunderstorm, and the outage is usually brief. Comes back on by itself when the rain slows up. I guess this could be a problem in a hurricane, but my thinking is that if you are still here when the outer bands hit you already know what is coming and should be prepared with a battery radio. (or you should already be gone) So far I have not lost both tv and internet at the same time.
I already had Century Link phone and DSl service so I went through them for a bundle price. They can only go so low on the Dish service but they are willing to deal on phone and DSl to get you a good bundle price.
I did have intermittent slowing of the DSL service back last month when others were complaining, but lately it's been fine again. A couple of months before that I had trouble too, which turned out to be the modem. They replaced it for free. Tech guy told me the modems don't last. Somewhere along the line I ended up with a spare modem - not the wireless but the plug in one, so I have that for backup. Overall I am much, much happier. I would never go back to Mediacon. At least Century Link treats me like a human being. And the price is a lot better.
You can't really make a decision until you find out if you have a line of sight. Once you know if you do, then you can deal for the best price.

When our daughter and son-in-law were at our home for their honeymoon June 20-27, CenturyLink was so slow as to be dysfunctional.

My sister also has CenturyLink. When we stayed at one of her homes two weeks ago, same thing -- very slow.

BR - Thanks for responding. Do you happen to know what internet "speed" you subscribe for ... versus your Sis?
I have some cynicism about whether different speeds truly exist. I'm suspicious that increased speeds are just marketing tools to bump pricing. At one point I decreased speed w/ MCC to reduce my bill and noticed no measurable reduction in time. But again... I'm no techy.

I would call myself an expert with high speed s i have at@t dsl and comcast high speed in atlanta downloading at 20 and 30 meg. when i bought a home here i got moth mediacom and embarq 10 meg dsl. i was very impressed with embarg and although no probems with medicom i canceled. the last 8 months since centurytel has taken over things have been horrible, the last 3 months i', downloading at 3 meg while paying for 10 plus having many disconnects and have called them several times and went thew possible problems with tech support who passed it to engineering.last week i insisted on a person coming out. they ran test and really found nothing wrong but would pass it again on to tech. any dynamic data i recieve is getting chopped up which tells me the dsl is coming and going. its just terrible.why has the dsl changed so badly from embarq? i don't know what to do as medicom seems just as bad going out for days on end

You're located near gulf-front in Sandestin/Miramar area aren't you? I only ask because I'm trying to discern if people's varied experiences are the result of specific locales / micro-climates, installation quality, personal needs/requirements, or some combination of these +other factors.

Ray, did you have any luck getting help from Sharon at Century Link? I e-mailed her and did not get a reply.

Uhhh....Looks like Sharon may be just like the service you got. Note that she logged in only once......ever... and then never came back. Hopefully this doesn't mirror the service they offer. I can only say I'm glad I'm not there after reading this thread.

I say vote with your pocketbook.

I'm tempted to hijack this thread and ask if anyone else with AT&T cell phones are have as poor a signal as I've had for the past month?
