Summer's Here For Fishing

May 21, 2010 by Larry Pentel

Just like throwing a light switch it turned summer here at the beach 3 days ago. Calm clear water, big schools of bait on the bar at daylight and high temps in the mid 80's. The forecast calls for it to stay like this for a while. Be great if it would stay for a few months !

The cobia run is over but lots of other species showing up to tussle. The grouper bite has picked up quite a bit the past few days and there have been some Mahi showing up as well. The kings should be here in force in the next day or two right behind all this bait. And, in case it could have slipped anyone's mind, Red Snapper season opens June 1st !

I took out a single angler on a half day trip this week, He said he had always wanted to go fishing in the Gulf and this was his first real chance. I tried to mix it up and chase as many species as possible in 4 hours. At the end of 2 hours he was fishing sitting down ( it was slick calm) and telling me how well he was going to sleep that night. He landed a couple kings, a Bull shark about 220#, some Red Groupers, triggers, vermillions, aj's and , of course a bunch of the ever present Red Snappers. I think the Kings and shark were his favorites.

A First Timer

Most of the trips have been a good mixed bag with a few of this and some of that. It's great to be able to hit so many species in 4 hours.

Look at the size of those Triggers

As usual, one fellow figured out the shallow water grouper bite and one figured out the triggers. The 3rd caught snappers no matter what he did !

This is one of the nicest times to get out on the water. With all the media hype about the oil spill hundreds of miles away there are few boats out (till the 1st), it's warm but not sweltering and the water is clear and calm. Take some time an go !
