Falling into Groupers in SoWal

September 27, 2011 by Larry Pentel

Early Fall is so nice at the Beach! The weather has been just wonderful, the water clear and calm with high temps in the 80's and lows in the 60's. Being able to keep a few Groupers each day makes the fishing even more enjoyable. We have been averaging four to five groupers a trip on my usual 1/2 day runs. Lots more to bite, but, they are groupers and the fish win more often than they lose!

The shrimp mogul of 30A, Mr Goatfeathers, called and asked me to take him and a couple ole' college buddies out to catch a few groupers the other afternoon. They had a blast.

A great morning had by all. A fine catch and some big ones lost for stories.

With a lot of big family groups coming to the beach these days it is not unusual for me to take different folks from the same group on consecutive days. The great part (for me) is when the folks that go the first day fight to come back the next.

The kings have still been kinda slim so I haven't really spent much time trolling but yesterdays folks let me give it a few minutes and we found one before going out to dig for Groupers and Triggers.

The forecast calls for more chamber of commerce conditions all week. I have to take tomorrow off to deal with some of this "reality" stuff and spend a bunch of my fees on tackle and boat maintenance but I plan on being out every day for at least a week after. Grab a rod and join me in spirit if not on the boat-- the trout bite has started heating up, a few flounders have been caught, plenty of groupers and I heard a couple bream pop behind my house last night---- Get out there and catch something!
