Gulf World, Gulf World Marine Institute, Diver’s Den and Sharky’s are joining together to host an all-day World Oceans Day event on June 8, 2018 from 7:00am until 7:00pm. On World Oceans Day people around our blue planet celebrate and honor the ocean, which connects us all! The festivities will start at the M.B. Miller County Pier from 7:00am until 9:00am where the public is invited to do a beach clean-up or dive with Diver’s Den as they clean up the waters around the pier.

Following the beach clean-up, Gulf World will host many family friendly and educational activities as well as photo opportunities and face painting from 9:30 am to 12:30pm. Gulf World will be open for normal operating hours with shows and exhibits.

At 1:00pm Diver’s Den will take a special trip into the Gulf to clean two of Panama City’s favorite diving and fishing spots and invite any interested divers to call the shop to reserve a spot on Wreckreation. Space will be limited.

The celebration will end at Sharky’s from 5:00pm until 7:00pm where kids and adults alike will have a chance to meet a mermaid and GW the dolphin mascot, enjoy educational activities and local art while listening to live entertainment and having a fantastic meal at Sharky’s.

A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean. The public is invited to join in this global initiative for a portion or the entire day full of activities.

The main action focus of World Oceans Day 2018 is to prevent plastic pollution and encourage solutions for a healthy ocean. Plastics are the most common form of marine debris. They can come fro a variety of land- and ocean- based sources, enter the water in many ways and impace the ocean and great lakes. The ocean is essential to Food Security, Human Health and survival of all life, powers our Earth's climate and is a critical part of the biosphere. The official designation of World Ocean Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the ocean.

The conservation action theme for World Oceans Day 2018 will be preventing Plastic Pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. The The Ocean Project continues to expand the youth-focus of World Oceans Day by further expanding the Youth Advisory Council with the addition of 10 new members. The young minds help to shape and improve World Oceans Day as it grows through the years, providing new perspectives, ideas, and recommendations.

Together with the Youth Advisory Council, The Ocean Project and its growing network of partners in 120 countries help rally the world each June and expand ocean conservation year-round.

On June 8th each year, we celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives, and how we can protect it. World Oceans Day helps raise the profile of the ocean and inspire more involvement in helping to conserve this amazing resource we all depend on.

The Ocean Project has promoted and coordinated World Oceans Day globally since 2002. We do so with a team based in the US and also advisors and volunteers in dozens of countries. We are a collaborative organization and work in partnership with hundreds of organizations, including World Ocean Network, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and many other networks from all sectors.

Thank you to the Government of Canada for proposing the concept of a World Ocean Day, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Together with the World Ocean Network, from 2004 to 2008 we developed and widely circulated a petition urging the United Nations to officially recognize World Oceans Day as 8 June each year. With help from hundreds of our partner organizations, tens of thousands of people from all parts of the world signed online and paper copies of the petition. As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is now officially recognized by the UN as 8 June each year. Official recognition of World Oceans Day by the United Nations provided an important boost to those organizations and individuals who have been deeply committed to ocean conservation.
