Hello all. For those of you in western sowal (not 30-A), equipment is arriving for the restart of the beach restoration project. Below is the Media Advisory we drafted yesterday.

**MEDIA ADVISORY**

BEACH RESTORATION PROJECT RESTARTS IN WESTERN WALTON COUNTY

WHO: Walton County Tourist Development Council

WHAT:

The delivery of equipment by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, LLC is beginning today with the delivery of a bulldozer. Beginning this weekend, mobilization will be in full swing with all remaining equipment arriving over the following days in preparation of the early December restart. All equipment will be brought onto the beach at Seascape near the Whale's Tail restaurant and moved westward into the restart area. No additional information is known at this time.

WHEN: Monday, November 20 at approx. 5 p.m.

WHERE: In front of Majestic Sun (east of Whale?s Tail Restaurant)

WHY:

More than 18,900 feet of beach was constructed in Walton County before the project was shut down on May 23. The project is now restarting and weather permitting, construction of the remaining 6,500 feet of beach in Walton County is expected to take approximately 50 days to complete and additional 50-60 days to complete the two miles in the City of Destin.

The large-scale beach restoration project is designed to repair critically eroded beaches due to successive storms. The method involves dredging sand from an underwater borrow site approximately one mile south of East Pass and pumping it onto the beach through a submerged pipeline. The sand is used to elevate the existing beach, construct a dune and widen the beach.

MEDIA CONTACTS: Tracy Louthain or Brad Pickel (850) 267-1216

Western Walton County Beach Restoration Project Timetable
November 29, 2006

The project remobilization restarted in mid-November with the delivery of a bulldozer. To date, approximately 100 segments of pipe, welding equipment, a mobile office and assorted other pieces of equipment have been delivered. The offshore submerged pipeline has been constructed and is awaiting flat seas to be installed, and the Dodge Island Dredge is currently en route with an anticipated arrival on Saturday. The estimated restart date is by the end of the weekend with 45 days scheduled for the completion of Walton County.

The Dodge Island Dredge holds approximately 2,200 cubic yards of sand and the estimated cycle time is about 4 hours. Daily production is initially estimated at 125 feet per day but may be higher once work commences. Until the actual production is known, 125 feet per day will be used to identify upcoming construction areas. To date, we have completed approximately 18,900 feet (50%) of the total project, and about 73% of the Walton County portion. There are 18,800 feet remain to complete the project. The following areas are expected to be under construction in the next three weeks barring inclement weather or mechanical difficulties.

Week of December 3rd
  • Construction is expected to restart in the vicinity of Mediterranea and move eastward to Costa del Sol
Week of December 10th
  • Construction is expected to continue at Costa del Sol and move eastward into the Frangista Beach area
Week of December 17th
  • Construction is expected to be finished in the Frangista Beach area, completing the eastern segment of this landing
  • At the completion of the eastern segment of this landing, construction of the project will recommence at Mediterranea moving westward toward Pompano Joe?s Restaurant.

Dear Brad,

What is the county going to do about the eroded beach at the Blue Mountain Beach access at end of Hwy 83?

On days when there is an on shore wind there is virtually no beach to sit on.

Also, with the number of people that depend on this access why isn't there a public washroom?

Thank you

The first question is going to be part of the discussion in the third public workshop for 30-A beaches on December 16th at the Sandestin Emerald Ballroom from 10 am to noon that I hope you will attend. I have posted on another link about that, and you can get more information at www.protectwaltoncountybeaches.com under Future Beach Initiatives.

As for the Blue Mountain Beach Access, it is one area that we are intending to build a restroom and repair the parking area after its use for construction access earlier this year. As a matter of fact, we have already completed the design and engineering of the restroom and parking facilities. However, we have focussed our efforts on repairs from Hurricane Ivan and Dennis repairs and spent in the arena of 4-6 million dollars. Currently, we still have 7 walkovers to reopen and this does not count the Miramar Beach Regional Access that is expected to cost in the 3-4 million dollar arena. Existing walkovers that need to be repaired or made safe always take precedence over new amentities. We are currently working with FDEP to get those permits and hope to start the bidding process this month. Two of those boardwalks are in Blue Mountain.

The current schedule is to construct the enhancements at the BMB access this fall/winter to impact as few people as possible who are using the access. Since we are installing underground drainage, the entire access will have to be shut down to complete the work.

I hope this helps to identify the reasons and timing for the upgrades. Please feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hello everyone. Strangely enough my post from this morning is already OBSOLETE!! (and was deleted) The project's production rate is almost double what was expected so the project is moving much more quickly then expected. :clap_1: This is a better approximation of where the project will be in the next three weeks.[/B]

Western Walton County Beach Restoration Project Timetable

REVISED FOR AREAS IN THE NEXT THREE WEEKS

The first full week of construction is complete and has been a complete success. The project has encountered no mechanical or weather delays since the restart. The project has been progressing east from the starting point south of the Mediterranea Condominiums, and construction is currently underway behind Costa del Sol Condominiums. This week approximately 950 feet of beach was constructed. To date, we have completed approximately 19,850 feet (52.6%) of the total project, and about 78.8% of the Walton County portion. The following areas are expected to be under construction in the next three weeks barring inclement weather or mechanical difficulties. Please note that these areas demonstrate a production rate of closer to 200 feet per day instead of the previously estimated 125 feet per day

Week of December 10th
  • Construction is continuing at Costa del Sol and is expected to be finished in the Frangista Beach area, completing the eastern segment of this landing
  • At the completion of the eastern segment of this landing, construction of the project will recommence at Mediterranea moving westward toward Pompano Joe’s Restaurant.
Week of December 17th
  • Construction is expected to be completed at the Pompano Joe’s Restaurant and moving through the Miramar Beach Regional Beach Access Area
Week of December 24th
  • Construction is expected to be completed at the Miramar Beach Regional Beach Access Area and moving past Crystal View, nearing the Avalon Beach Area

Brad, what about Seagrove? Are we scheduled for any restoration? How about the secondary dune line that Opal knocked out?
