Walton County to Celebrate Earth Day

Friday, April 15 - Earth Day 5k Race

This weekend the Friends of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and the University of Florida-IFAS Extension of Walton County will host the Third Annual Walton County Earth Day Festival and 5k Race. Both events will occur at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park on Scenic Highway 30A in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.

On Friday, April 15, runners and walkers are invited to participate in the annual Earth Day 5k Race at Topsail. The race will begin at 6 p.m. Racers can preregister for $20 or register the day of the race for $25. Participants will receive a complementary reusable bag and festival shirt for participating in the race. For more information about the 5k race, please call (850) 267-8330.

The Third Annual Walton County Earth Day Festival will take place the next day, Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public. The festival will feature interactive educational displays from local businesses, as well as hands-on cooking demonstrations. Guests have the opportunity to participate in three different cooking demonstrations. Come learn how to make healthy smoothies at 10:30 a.m., sushi at 12:30 p.m. and vegetarian meals at 2 p.m.

Throughout the day, the festival will offer two guided hiking tours of the coastal systems in Topsail Hill Preserve State Park at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Nonie?s Ark will also join the festival at 12:30, providing animals encounters for festival participants. The festival will have a special children?s activity area where children can learn information about the environment through storytelling and other fun activities.

Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in a sand castle sculpture building demo on the beaches of Topsail at 11:15 a.m., followed by a sand-castle building contest at noon. Door prizes will be awarded hourly and guests can place bids on items like local artwork, jewelry and gift baskets at the festivals silent auction.

Volunteers needed on Saturday!

On Saturday the Friends of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and the Walton County UF-IFAS Extension are hosting the Walton County Earth Day Festival at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park from 10-3. We are looking for volunteers to assist throughout the day in a variety of activities. We need people for set up, during the festival, and breakdown.

Set-up times will be in 1.5 hour blocks from 7 to 10am, Festival help will be 1 or 2 hour blocks from 10-3, and breakdown will be from 3-4:30. If you would like to participate and volunteer in this event please email Sid at sandaheath@mchsi.com or call Jennifer at 855-2667. Any assistance is always welcome.
