Valentine's Day is a great holiday!

You just have to celebrate it as a fun day about all the people who love you, not the mercenary Hallmark version w/ jewelry and overpriced posies.

Of course, I was raised by a mother who dyed our food colors for major holidays, so I tend to have a slightly different view of how these holidays are supposed to go.

After spending most of my life being the heavy smart girl with glasses and despising Valentine's Day, I found my forever Valentine almost 19 years ago. It's been great ever since.

Of course, all I expect is a card and some food that I don't have to cook. Flowers are acceptable, as long as I'm not the one writing the check for the bill. Anything more has me questioning how we are going to pay for whatever it is, or whether he has been hoarding money out of the family coffers.

I like to do Valentines for friends -- usually just a few cookies. Other than that, I'd rather just cook something nice at home and open a great bottle of wine. Restaurants are usually not up to their usual level of quality and service, nor are florists. Flowers are better saved for a random day.

As with most holidays, simple is best.

Of course, you can never go wrong with a massage gift certificate.
