The REP Theatre is proud to present Sam Shepard's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama True West. Holed up in their mother’s California house, screenwriter Austin and lowlife Lee wrestle with big issues—and each other, leading to the airing of old resentments and some unexpected twists in the relationship. With an all-star cast including Bruce Collier, Susan Petro, Brook Stetler, Kyle Walter who are directed by Scott Stackhouse, this limited run show is sure to leave a lasting impression. Guest director Scott Stackhouse is a graduate of UCLA's MFA Acting program and currently teaches performance classes for the Theatre Department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Scott has worked nationally as an actor, director, vocal coach and fight choreographer. Scott has directed in four previous seasons at The REP, including The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Marvelous Monkey King, The 39 Steps, Beanie & the Bamboozling Book Machine, Around the World in 80 Days, The Tempest, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged and Shipwrecked!. Some of his other directing credits include Macbeth, The Shape of Things, A Devil Inside, A Comedy of Errors, Lysistrata, Noises Off!, the Midwest premiere of The Atomic View Motel,and most recently, Seven Guitars and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at UMKC. He is currently serving as vocal coach on several productions in Kansas City and stays active doing voice over work whenever time allows.
Sam Shepard, was an American actor, playwright, author, screenwriter, and director whose body of work spanned half a century. He won 10 Obie Awards for writing and directing, the most given to any writer or director. He wrote 44 plays as well as several books of short stories, essays, and memoirs. Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child. New York magazine described him as "the greatest American playwright of his generation." Shepard's plays are chiefly known for their bleak, poetic, often surrealist elements, black humor, and rootless characters living on the outskirts of American society.
