The kids got a great write-up in The Herald/Breeze, but it won't come out until week after next. This weeks issue was so full, we had to hold some of our arts reviews and movie reviews until the next one:wave:

I just read it! Great write-up for great kids by a great writer. Thanks Alicia!

I meant every word of it. Show me an actor who is passionate about their job any-day, over one who takes it for granted and I'll tell you who moves me.

I went over to Pensacola this weekend to watch a "professional" production. There was one "professional" actor who really blew my socks off, but the kids could have held their own with the rest of the cast. The talent level was the same. I think it's time we start to rethink the term 'professional ' in theater and not equate it with just a resume or getting paid. Passion and heart are a big part of art;-)

Internally Brilliant
and
extremely enjoyable

By ALICIA LEONARD

When a group protested Blithe Spirit being performed, a few years back at South Walton High School, Seaside Rep stepped up and allowed the kids affected by that protest to perform it on the Rep?s stage. This move helped usher in and foster the Rep?s Summer Intern program for high school students that has now become a staple and integral part of the Rep?s summer season over the last few years.

The kids, many with an interest in theatre or the arts, work all summer long doing whatever is needed to get productions up on their legs and supporting them, whether by selling tickets, working as assistant stage managers and running crew, sewing costumes, hanging lights and anything else (and there is a lot needed for every production) to keep everything flowing and audiences entertained. During all of their work, they also find time, somehow, to rehearse and give one heck of a performance as the highlight of their summertime well spent at The Rep.

The intern shows have become a favorite of mine. I?m not sure if it?s because the kids are so talented or they have so much energy and enthusiasm onstage, but it is quickly becoming a highlight for me to get to attend and watch them do their thing and do it well as they did this past weekend.

Artistic Director Brook Stetler and Internship Program Manager Anne Marie Carroll spent about five to six hours a week rehearsing with their interns, working on a variety of pieces for this end-of-summer production. They helped the young actors by guiding them to pick contrasting pieces that allowed the group, sometimes in duos or sometimes alone, to shine and show their range from comedy to drama, showcase their singing talents and even, for the first time, threw in a good dose of Shakespeare monologues to teach them how to wrap their heads and tongues around his language, knowing it?s designed to be spoken and not just read. The multiple choice of material was born out of the desire for the interns to learn about the ?process rather than the product,? according to their directors. It paid off well from the sound of the applause the young thespians received at the end of the night and through-out the show.

The 2010 south Walton interns were Kaylyn Carter, Will Dargavell, Grayson Gilbert, Wade Howard, Shawn Howard, Lucy Livingston, and David Weintraub. Past and present interns in college and home for the summer were Gillian Grayson from Florida State University and Mercer Pinkston from the University of Georgia. The production team was comprised of KC Shaffer as stage manager and Rep. Alum from 2008, Bri Weintraub as an assistant stage manager and Rep. Alum from 2009 and Mercer Pinkston, who did the light design for the program.

Although the entire program was very enjoyable and entertaining, each actor had a point of near excellence with the following pieces, Lucy Livingston in the Sis Hopkins Audition and Kaylyn Carter in Happy Birthday had the audience in stitches with laughter. Gillian Gilbert as Viola would be a quick casting decision for someone looking to do Twelfth Night. She was made for that part. Wade Howard?s Demetrius from A Midsummer Night?s Dream was one of the strongest Shakespeare interpretations of the night. A clear, forceful, modern delivery, without some of the over-wrought pauses that often break-up the verse was a treat for a Shakespeare lover like me. Grayson Gilbert?s dramatic monologue from Fat Pig by Neil Labute made some audience members squirm, just as it was written to do, and was an excellent example of a dramatic monologue done right.

I only have one complaint about this showcase; I have to wait until the interns return to see another one.

This show keeps on giving....Kate asked that I download the lyrics to "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better" after hearing Grayson and Gillian Gilbert sing it in the show ( and they were fantastic). Watching eight year olds sing this one is VERY entertaining!
