Shibori & Cochineal Natural Dye Workshop
This workshop combines two ancient practices: Shibori and Dyeing Textiles with Cochineal. Shibori is a cloth resist-dye method developed by the Japanese. In class you will learn basic techniques to fold, stitch, compress, bind and clamp silk scarves before dyeing them in a rich Cochineal bath. Cochineal is an insect farmed for use as a natural colorant in Mexico and Peru. The Cochineal used in class is farmed outside of Oaxaca, Mexico, in a small napalry. Take part in this ancient art and leave with a beautiful hand dyed scarf!

Artist: Celine Thibault is a designer based in Austin, Texas. Last spring she attended a Natural Pigments Residency at Arquetopia in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she learned to dye textiles using natural dyes from plants and animals. Her instructor, Beto Ruiz, is a weaver from Teotitlan del Valle and learned to dye and weave from his parents. During the residency Celine was able to dye fabric with cochineal, indigo, Mexican tarragon, pomegranate, and Pecan. She also hand made apparel inspired by the native dress and regional embroidery of Oaxaca. She returned to Austin eager to experiment and share her experience through interactive workshops. She's visiting SoWal to teach a workshop on 9/13--sign up at www.AtelierThibault.com/Workshops/
