SavvyT - thank you so much for announcing this event! my son's class went on a field trip to Alaqua Animal Refuge, located in Freeport, just last week! the children had the most amazing experience seeing all the different animals, hearing about the process of rescuing and caring for animals, and seeing for themselves a really beautiful, caring, clean refuge. I was touched to hear about this facility, and will go for a visit very soon to see for myself, and possibly donate supplies and/or volunteer.

The children learned so much and each child provided three names of their choice which were added to the name list to be used for new animals at the refuge. the children can watch online to see what animal received their name and track the adoptions, etc. because of one field trip with 25 children, more families have information (info was sent home with each child, along with stories told by excited children - I know my child was thrilled with the day's experience) more about caring for animals and where to rescue one when they are ready to adopt a pet. Teachers were completely blown away at the overall excellent care and services provided to a range of abandoned/rescued animals.

I am excited that we have such a facility in our area. their website provides a lot of great information, and ways to help.

Alaqua will be participating in a weekend long adopt-a-thon at Petsmart this Friday, May 2 ? Sunday, May 4 from 11 am ? 5 pm daily. We plan on bringing lots of puppies, kittens and adults.

We could use your help for the following:

- Dog & puppy wash on Thursday to prepare for the weekend
- Transport to and from the event
- Helping adopt out animals during the event (we schedule volunteers in 2 hour time slots)
- Spread the word! It is puppy and kitten ?season? and lots need your help finding homes

We also will be at Belk on Saturday morning from 6 am ? 10 am for the Belk Days sale, which sales from coupon books will benefit the refuge. We are looking for help that morning to adopt out kittens on site.

June 14, 2008 - 9 am - 8 pm - Canine Festival - Pier Park in Panama City Beach - AKC sanctioned events, Obedience, Flyball, Conformation and Rally. There will be Agility Demonstrations. Lots of events people can participate in for fun and loads of vendors--including Alaqua Animal Refuge. The event highlight is the Canines In Flight Frisbee Demonstration as featured on Animal Planet.



June 28, 2008 - Hogs for Dogs Poker Run - Click here to view flyer. 5 card hand, Registration/First Stop - Lucky Star (Freeport), Second Stop - Bayou Pub & Play (Niceville), Third Stop - Hooters (Crestview), Fourth Stop - AMVETS Post 178 (DeFuniak Springs), Fifth and Final Stop - The Outpost (Freeport, FL), 50/50 drawing, door prizes, t-shirts, live music, great food. In case of a tie, each player will draw one card, and high card wins.

They normally need volunteers for events.. so mark the date now if you can help out!
