Who will be king of the grill and win the coveted “People’s Choice and Judge’s Pick Awards” at this year’s 6th Smoke on the Coast BBQ & Fireworks Festival at Destin Commons? It will be held on Sunday, July 3, from 5 to 10 p.m. Over a dozen area restaurants and BBQ experts will fire up their grills vying to be the best. This year’s judges are Q92 DJ Chelsea Castoria, VIP Destin Magazine editor Steve Barber and Ken Wampler of Newman-Dailey Resort Properties.

From 6 to 8 p.m., for $1 per sampling, attendees can sample mouth-watering BBQ dishes hot off the grills and cast their votes to determine the People’s Choice winner.

The highly anticipated annual event will feature its tradition of BBQ competitors lining the streets under tents, each preparing their BBQ specialty. Whole Foods will be sponsoring the beverages tents offering New Belgium Fat Tire and Watermelon Lime Ale to mention a few varieties. Area favorites Continuum and Heritage will be there performing live; capture memories at the photo booth; red, white and blue clad street stilt walkers will be strolling throughout Destin Commons and kids can get their faces painted by Arts on the Beach.

Area charities Building Homes For Heroes, Children in Crisis, and Food For Thought will be on hand volunteering during the event and proceeds raised will benefit these three non-profit organizations.

This year’s participating BBQ teams will be previous winners Building Homes For Heroes and Brightview Landscaping, along with Whole Foods Market, Buh’s BBQ, Cold Creek BBQ, Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl & Grill, Hickory River Smokehouse, B&C Fire and Safety and Waste Management.

The evening concludes with a big bang at 9:15 with a fireworks finale, a spectacular display lighting up the skyline over Destin Commons with accompanying patriotic music.

This year’s sponsors are Whole Foods Market, Apex Broadcasting, Brightview Landscaping, Harrison Contracting, Waste Management, Cigar Factory Social Club, Life’s A Beach, Okaloosa Gas, Windcreek Atmore and Gulf Power.

Award winning Destin Commons is located at the corner of Highway 98 and the Mid Bay Bridge road. For more information, visit www.DestinCommons.com or follow Destin Commons on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.
