A Quick little Dental Story

I have always taken good care of my teeth by having regular cleanings and have only managed to need 2 fillings in my 35 years. A little over 10 years ago, when I was struggling to survive on service industry pay and going to Grad School, I missed my cleaning appointment with my regular dentist. Embarrassed at being a no-show, I decided to call the dental office of a dentist with a billboard in the local area to schedule an appointment. After my cleaning, when the dentist arrived, the dentist used a device I wasn’t familiar with and read numbers aloud to the hygienist who recorded them. The dentist then informed me I had 9 cavities! I was devastated. This would have left me completely broke as the cost to repair was around 2k. I left the dentist office and cried on my way back to work. The next day, I got the courage to call my old dentist office who told me to come in. He didn’t charge me to look at my teeth. He spent five minutes with me before he said this is b.s., your teeth are fine. In fact, in the last ten years, I have not needed a single filling. Now imagine if I had allowed the dentist with the billboard to drill into 9 of my perfectly fine teeth when not necessary and to also take my meager savings! How would I be able to prove later that this dentist had lied about the status of my teeth?

The point of all this is that we put a certain level of trust with the dentists and doctors we interact with, but they are people like everyone else, and some of them can be predatory. If you feel like something isn’t right, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion from another service provider. An honest one probably wouldn’t even charge you to do so.

I like my dentist. He is old fashioned. He doesn’t have a billboard, or offer botox or other beauty treatments beyond whitening. His office has been staffed with the same hygienists for years.

If you are strapped for cash and have a little time you can go to the dental school in Defuniak. They will fix your teeth and provide cleanings to you for much less than a dentist office. Lecom.edu is their website.
