Sacred Heart to Host Diabetes Classes and Support Group in April

Have you or your loved one been diagnosed with diabetes? Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast and Jenny Stuckey, registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, will host diabetes self-management classes and a diabetes support group in April. The events will take place in the Resource Center Suite 3 conference room at Sacred Heart.

The diabetes support group will meet on Tuesday, April 5 at 6 p.m. The support group is open to everyone, including people dealing with diabetes, their family members or caregivers. The support group is free, and a physician referral is not required.

The diabetes self-management classes will be offered on Tuesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class, open to adults with diabetes who are looking for ways to manage their disease, will cover topics on exercise, medication, and nutrition for patients to reduce the symptoms of diabetes. Pre-registration is required and a physician referral is needed to attend the class. Most major insurances are accepted.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, which is a hormone that is needed to convert starches, sugar and other food into the energy you need for daily life. Unfortunately, the exact cause of diabetes is not known, but genetics, obesity and lack of exercise are considered risk factors.

For more information or to join the classes or support group, please call Jenny Stuckey at (850) 278-3683. For more information about Sacred Heart, please visit www.sacredheartemerald.org.
