I have been thinking about renting a pontoon boat for the last few times we have been in Sowal. I tink we are going to use Shell Island Boat rentals & Tours. We are only lookng to putt over, find a nice place for a picnic, maybe throw a line in the water, and look for some shells. It's the wife, mother in law and my 3 year old son. Four hours is the max.

Any recommendations out there on what to look for or what to avoid??

I really appreciate all the info I get from this website!!

the whole shell island area has lots of sand bars and shoals - just be careful and don't run aground - if there are no boats where you are heading, there's probably a reason (too shallow)

"when in doubt, let somebody else find out" - if you are unsure and there's a question of shallow water or where the channel is, follow somebody else (they don't have to know what you're doing) toward the beach - sea tow is very expensive for a pull off and they have the monopoly

one life jacket per person onboard, one throwable cushion, valid fishing licenses, absolutely no open booze or beer in a moving boat unless a completely sober person who will not be drinking is driving the boat, and be sure the fish you have on board are the right size and species

watch out for the guys in the little red boat - they have guns (if you really want to annoy them, pull up next to them and make noises like their inflatable boat has a leak)
