Pensacola, Florida is celebrating its 450th Birthday this year!!! Today, August 15, 2009, is very special. At 9 a.m. this morning a Catholic Mass is being held by Bishop Ricard on Pensacola Beach near the gate at Ft. Pickens to commemorate the first religious service held in the Pensacola area. On that date, Dominican Friars with explorer Tristan De Luna, held a service commemorating the Feast of the Assumption which is marked with this sign viewed from the Gulf Islands National Seashore Road near Pensacola and Ft. Pickens. There will be reenactors performing throughout the day, Spanish food by local chefs, and fireworks in the evening.
Tristan de Luna had a settlement in Pensacola in 1559. Later, in 1565, St. Augustine was established.
