Although as a trail runner, I don't like the current condition due to the sand pine clearing project (appearance and loss of shade), there's no doubt the return of native long leaf pine will be a good thing going forward to restore a more natural ecosystem. I think I read in one of the articles that the native long leaf will not be harvested on a regular basis as the sand pines have been and will continue to grow, just managed as needed.
I ride the trails often, usually west of 395. They are beautiful. I need to get over on the east side of 395 and see what the trails look like after the clearing.

I enter from a hidden trail across 30A from Clay Nursery & Landscaping, and as of about 2 weeks ago, there was no clearing activity in that area of the Cassine Trail, Eastern Lake Trail, or the trails/roads north of Eastern Lake and and in and leading into Deer Lake State Park. There's a lot of saw and scrub palmetto, and most of the pine stands are younger until you get into Deer Lake State Park, but my guess is that those in Deer Lake won't be harvested since that's a state park and not a state forest. The attached picture is the most recent route I ran...
