Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra presents

‘The Barber of Seville’

Oct. 29, 2011 7:30 p.m.

Mattie Kelly Arts Center at NWFSC, 100 College Blvd, Niceville
The Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, together with guest musicians and vocalists from across the United States, will bring to life one of the greatest comic operas ever written as the second performance of their 2011-2012 season. NFSO Conductor and Music Director Jeffrey Rink upholds his reputation for bringing opera to life with a concert version of Rossini's “The Barber of Seville,” presented in Italian with English supertitles, on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
According to Rink, the success of last year's “Madama Butterfly” – presented in the same concert style – is what inspired this performance of The Barber of Seville. The orchestra will be seated in the orchestra pit with the singers on stage, performing with props and suggestions of costumes and with projections of old Spain on stage to give the audience a more complete operatic experience. "’The Barber of Seville’ performance is not only an opportunity to hear first class opera in our local area, but is also a great way to introduce the thrilling of experience of opera through a totally 'user-friendly' version of this art form," said Rink.
The role of Figaro, the world's most famous and mischievous barber, will be sung by New York-based David Murray who has performed this role almost 50 times throughout Europe and returns to the NFSO for a guest appearance after a two-year absence. Playing Count Almaviva, the other lead male in the NFSO's presentation of “The Barber of Seville,” is tenor Adam Kirkpatrick hailing from Atlanta. NFSO concertgoers will remember Kirkpatrick's beautiful performance of Haydn's “Creation” in April of 2009. The female lead, Rosina, will be portrayed by stellar mezzo soprano Michele Detwiler of Boise, Idaho.
Tickets are $32.50 each for adults, $16 for Active Duty Military (four ticket military discount limit), and $16 for youth ages 18 and younger. Contact the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Box Office, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., by phone, (850) 729-6000, or on the Web at www.mattiekellyartscenter.org.
