The new fitness area inside the Walton Sports Complex hosted its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

Now, fitness junkies or folks just looking for some exercise can come at any time to use the equipment.

Walton County officials tell us that due to the constant growth of the area, numerous improvements have been made to the sports complex since it opened.

Commissioners said this fitness area was a need and a first of its kind in the county.

Walton County District 5 Commissioner Tony Anderson has always been very passionate about fitness and recreation projects.

“Well, this is one of our most used parks, and everybody is always trying to get in shape, especially the seniors. You know the older you get, the harder it is to get the weight off, and believe me, I know, I’m a senior,” said Commissioner Anderson.

The fitness area has ten exercise stations with instructional pictures. County officials said they wanted the area to be covered so it could be used year-round.

The project cost around $300,000.

“It’s really what we’ve been able to do with this park, and with the board’s help, we have really made this an all-inclusive area for all our citizens,” said Joe Ribaudo, South Walton’s recreation coordinator.

The plan is to see how well this fitness area works before adding more around the county’s parks and sports complexes.
