Novel celebrates magic of the Florida Gulf Coast
Meet local author at Sundog Books in Seaside
WHO: The Gulf Coast is home to a diverse community of authors ? Mike Stewart and James Lee Burke are examples - who use the coastal region as a backdrop for their stories, helping to preserve the area?s culture and history through literature. James Harvey is a Seaside resident and new contributor to this ?Gulf Coast Lit? genre with his debut novel Grayton Beach Affair (March 2011).
WHAT: In Grayton Beach Affair,German-born Christian Wolfe is disenchanted with America after being educated in Atlanta and returns to Berlin. Because of his intimate knowledge of America and flawless English, he is coerced by the German military during World War II to board a U-boat bound for the Gulf of Mexico and the sleepy coastal town of Grayton Beach to extract a high level German officer imprisoned in a coastal POW camp.
During his assignment, Christian meets Maggie Neal and his mission is compromised by a subsequent death and involvement with the police. Discovering that they need each other to survive, Christian and Maggie have a brief and passionate affair, leaving each with deep but unsettled feelings for the other ? feelings that linger long after Christian returns to Europe to work for the French Resistance. After the war, and having never forgotten Maggie, Christian is determined to find her, but with a relationship founded on death and deception, could they possibly build a future together?

?It is refreshing to see a beloved place like Grayton Beach portrayed in a work of fiction. It provides both a historical and cultural context of the area as well as giving the reader a sense of time and place in parallel to one of the most significant World Wars in history? - thirty-A Review
James Harvey was born in southern Alabama, spent childhood summers in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and now splits his time between his homes in Atlanta and a small town near Seaside, Fla. He is well acquainted with the mid Gulf Coast region and captures the culture in his novel as only a true southerner can. For more information, please visit www.graytonbeachaffair.com.
