?Transcendental Meditation? will be the topic at the Oct. 7 meeting of the Emerald Coast Meditation Society (ECMS). The meeting will start with 30 minutes of meditation at 6:30 p.m. at 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98.
Prudence Bruns, a certified teacher of TM, will be the speaker. In 1966, at the age of 18, Bruns started Transcendental Meditation at UCLA, and in 1967 she opened and ran a Yoga Institute for Swami Satchidananda in Boston. In 1968 she was made a TM teacher after attending her first teacher training course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh, India. She returned to Rishikesh in 1970 to study further with Maharishi. Since 1968, she has taught thousands of people to meditate in the United States and Canada.
Bruns later returned to school, earning a Ph.D. in South Asian Studies, Sanskrit, from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2007. During the course of her graduate studies, she spent two years studying in India while residing in the homes of Indian families. She has written several books along with articles for journals and magazines and has taught at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University.
After marrying Albert Bruns, also a TM teacher, in 1969, she spent her honeymoon in Seagrove Beach, where she now lives. Over the years she has taught meditation to large numbers of people along the Emerald Coast and is currently a director of the NW Florida TM Program. She and her husband have three children and four grandchildren.
The ECMS is a nonsectarian group that welcomes meditators of all varieties. It usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Anyone who needs instruction should arrive by 6:15 p.m. If you have questions contact Nancy James, nancyjames@embarqmail.com.
