More than 400 men and women are expected to come together to promote women’s health and raise money for local charities at White-Wilson’s third annual Little Black Dress Party on May 19 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center.
This year's story teller, Laurie Beck, owner of Pilates by the sea, will chronicle her cancer diagnosis, providing a poignant reminder that individuals must be proactive with their health.
"We are delighted to have Laurie Beck as our presenter this year," said Andi Mahoney, marketing manager at White-Wilson Medical Center. "She is a wellness expert with an incredible tale of being diagnosed with and overcoming cancer. Her take away tips are things we can all adopt in our own lives."
Beck was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Marginal Cell Leukemia more than six years ago. Beck refused to be victimized by the diagnosis or the disease. Today her cancer is in remission and she learned many lessons along the way, including to stop and listen to her body and her inner voice. She learned to stop making excuses and that it is important to eliminate stress.
Ultimately, she became proactive with her health. She found a doctor that she felt comfortable with and they made decisions together. She learned that in order to survive, she had to transform the way she thought about cancer. With a desire to share her knowledge with others, she recently published "Eight Little Lessons of Hope & Healing," a small meditative book that highlights simple lessons to unify the mind, body and spirit with uplifting thoughts of harmony, positivity and humor. In addition,
Beck has documented her journey in her memoir, "I am Living to Tell," which will be out this spring.
This year’s event will include a trip to Paris for two in the auction.
Last year, the Little Black Dress Party was a sell-out event, raising more than $30,000 for local charities, including the Shelter House, Opportunity Place, American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
Tickets are still available for the 2012 event, which includes a fashion show, live and silent auctions, a DJ and delectable dining. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.fwblittleblackdressparty.com/event.htm
