Immortal Light: Wet-plate photography by Bailey Miller
Bailey Miller is a diverse medium artist and an all-around Renaissance woman. She is a native of Rayle, Georgia and studied photography and painting at Savannah College of Art & Design, and large format/ film at The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA.
She is accomplished in an array of techniques ranging from painting & photography to sculpture & landscape design. She currently resides in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and works as an ornamental horticulturalist.
In early 2016, she began exploring the world of wet-plate collodion photography, a historical process that was used mainly between 1850-1900. It produces a photographic image on a glass or metal plate. It involves coating a surface (usually glass or aluminum) with a mixture of collodion. The plate is then made light-sensitive in a bath of silver nitrate, after which it is exposed to light. The image exposure can take seconds or several minutes, depending on available light. It’s developed and then stabilized in a solution of potassium cyanide. Each plate is shot, developed, and fixed while the plate is still wet. Hence the name “wet plate”.
The process to create one photograph is cumbersome and potentially dangerous. Each step requires a combination of dexterity, intense observation, and critical timing. It forces the photographer to slow down and methodically think through each shot. Unlike our modern digital processes, there are so many unpredictable variables involved. The result is a rare sole image that is truly unique.
