Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI) is releasing “Jaime Lannister”, the loggerhead sea turtle into the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, February 4th at 9:00 am from the beach in front of the Carousel Supermarket at 19440 Front Beach Road.
An educational setup will begin at 8:30 am, with the release to follow promptly upon the turtle's arrival at 9:00.
Jaime was rescued from the Okaloosa Pier on October 5th after being observed unable to dive. With the help of pier staff, the sea turtle rescue team at Gulfarium C.A.R.E Center brought Jaime to their facility for initial assessment and triage. Two circle hooks were removed from his left front flipper and both flippers had wounds that were already healing. Jaime was then transferred to Gulf World Marine Institute on October 16th to continue rehabilitation. Treated with antibiotics to prevent infection, Jaime’s condition steadily improved as he continued to eat and swim well. Now, Jaime has been medically cleared by GWMI veterinary staff and cleared for release by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The public is invited to attend this event.
GWMI would like to thank everyone involved in Jaime’s rescue. If you see a stranded or deceased dolphin, whale or sea turtle, please immediately report to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, 1-888-404-3922 or #FWC on your cell phone.
