Hands Across The Sand is held annually in Florida and on beaches, waterways and land all around the world. The event is intended to bring awareness about the dangers inherent in securing and burning dirty fuels and to champion a new era of Clean Energy for a sustainable planet for our children and theirs.

“Our planet depends on our continued activism in order to ensure it will be here for future generations.” Dede Shelton, Executive Director. Hands Across The Sand

Hands Across the Sand was founded in 2010 by restaurateur, Dave Rauschkolb of Seaside, Florida. The grew into an international movement after the BP oil disaster in April of that year. People around the world, came together to join hands, forming symbolic barriers against spilled oil and standing against the impacts of other forms of extreme energy.

The mission of Hands Across the Sand is to bring together individuals and organizations to promote a clean energy future across the world and end our dependence on dirty fuels. It is our goal to gather thousands of Americans and global citizens at beaches and cities to draw metaphorical and actual lines in the sand,,, human lines in the sand against fossil fuels that threaten our future.

Eight years later, we invite activists to call for the President to maintain the Paris Climate Accord, reject offshore drilling, the KXL and other tar sands pipelines, hydraulic fracking, seismic air gun blasting and call on local and state leaders to protect our communities by rejecting projects that expand the extraction and use of fossil fuels — and instead accelerate the shift to clean, renewable energy.

In 2017, we had 112 events around the Globe. There were events in Belize, Canada, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. Around the United States, there were events in Florida, one being held at Ed Walline State Park in Santa Rosa Beach, California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Washington. Miami has held the record for the largest event, last year 500+ people joined hands up and down Miami Beach.

The 2018 event date is May 19th and we already have 14 events entered on the web page including one in Bangladesh. It’s a simple 15-minute event and we provide training, and all the resources needed to organize a successful event by visiting; Hands Across the Sand | A worldwide gathering of people dedicated to a clean energy future and ending our dependence on filthy fuels.

“It’s the most important thing we can do as human beings” – Dave Rauschkolb, founder.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 15, 2018

HANDS ACROSS THE SAND/LAND” PROTESTS SLATED FOR 117 LOCATIONS WORLDWIDE ON MAY 19TH

Communities standing up against offshore drilling in 17 states and seven countries

WHO: International, national and local conservation groups are organizing local protests against offshore drilling in the waters off the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. The groups include: Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Sierra Club, Earth Ethics, Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council, Another Gulf is Possible, Redfin and Gulf Restoration Network. For more information, go to www.handsacrossthesand.org.

WHAT: Crowds will join hands forming lines across beaches, parks and state capitol steps in synchronized "Hands Across the Sand/Land" protests. This includes 113 synchronized events across 17 states and seven countries to raise awareness about the dangers of dirty fuels and the need to accelerate the transition to available, affordable clean energy solutions. The show of opposition is particularly important this year, given the Trump Administration’s draft plan to expand offshore drilling to nearly all of the American coastline and its assault on public lands.

WHEN: Saturday, May 19th at noon local time (media check in at 11:30 am local time).

WHERE: Across 18 states and seven countries, groups will hold 117 synchronized events. For a full list of events visit: Hands Across the Sand | A worldwide gathering of people dedicated to a clean energy future and ending our dependence on filthy fuels

WHY: Drilling offshore is investing in a dirty energy past, instead of a green energy future. It also conflicts with international agreements to fight climate change. The impacts of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling threaten people across the world. Hands Across the Sand participants will urge more local elected officials to formally oppose the Trump administration’s draft plan to expand offshore drilling and to take a stronger stand against the expansion of offshore drilling along the coast.

Floridian Dave Rauschkolb founded Hands Across the Sand/Land in October 2009. Hands Across the Sand/Land is sponsored by national environmental organizations including Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Sierra Club, Earth Ethics, Center for Biological Diversity, Another Gulf is Possible, Redfin and Gulf Restoration Network.

FOLLOW: Hands Across the Sand on Facebook for updates on beaches throughout the world participating in the event this Saturday May 19 at noon in each time zone.
