I've been teaching guitar for about 25 years and have been playing for 44 years. My courses use a minimum of theory (although some is necessary) by learning modern songs, rhythmic techniques, and changing chords with ease by using alternate fingering positions. Most great guitar players have an ear and a sense for music, so that's the way I prefer to teach guitar.
I try to pass my feel and techniques along to my students. I expect them to learn and memorize what I teach them. This is the way today's most popular guitar players have learned to play. I have come to realize that more students have a better retention rate doing it this way.
I teach recent rock songs on electric guitar and a more rock/folk style for acoustic guitar. I can also teach you a little country if that's what you want. I prefer teaching electric guitar with some acoustic included to end up with a multi-skilled student. I can start with beginner chords, advance rhythm styles and then progress on to soloing if desired. I try to tailor the lessons to fit each student's skills and progress from there. I use a specific sequence of songs that are meant to build the student's capabilities into a well-rounded player with good learning skills.
For the first round of lessons only a guitar is needed. I have several amplification set-ups with a wide variety of textures and tones for my students to use. For the first lesson, I will teach how to set up and maintain a guitar for ultimate performance. Most students are never taught this but I think it is an important step in making the student sound better and makes it easier for them to learn as the instrument performs better. Many of my young student's parents tell me that they have been paying to have their kid's strings changed. You won't need to do that if I am their teacher. I learned these set up methods through vast experience with hundreds of guitars. In the early eighties, I worked for the Beach Boys maintaining 47+ guitars and the maintenance skills were simply a part of the job.
Intermediate courses will involve amplification techniques and effects training, so it may be necessary for students to bring some of their own gear that they want to learn more about.
Most guitar teachers charge $30 per half hour. I don't think a half hour is enough time to convey a complete idea and have it "soak in" properly, so I prefer hour long lessons. For an hour long lesson I still charge only $30. I also have a flexible schedule to accommodate even the busiest of people.
My students tell me what fun they have when they learn from me. I think learning guitar should be fun. For younger students, I require a parent to be present. For adults, just bring your guitar and I'll teach you songs from Roy Orbison, The Beatles, Sheryl Crow, Jimi Hendrix, Mountain, Jeff Beck, Lifehouse... I even taught one of my students Taylor Swift songs.
I will also be teaching a few of my songs if you are interested in learning some really odd and complex chords and rhythmic patterns. My songs may sound simple, but try to figure out just how I play some of them and you'll see they're not so easy to play. I can also teach by request. You pick the song and if I think you are capable of learning it, I will teach it to you. If your skills aren't up to a particular requested song, I can put you on a path to acquire the skills to eventually learn it.
