The menu thread really started me thinking about planning my own menu's for the 2nd week in July. Some items that I need advise on least expensive/best fresh seafood-I love to grill fish and cook shrimp in several different ways. Also-we are not planning on bringing a lot of the necessities but buying them when we get there. Where is the best place to buy grocery items? We will be staying at GulfPlace in Santa Rosa. Thanks for all the great advise!!

If staying at Gulf Place, I recommend going west on 30A up to Hwy 98. Continue west (towards Destin) on Hwy 98. Just past the hospital, you will see Publix on your right. It is a regular size store with much to offer. On your way back to Gulf Pl, you might want to stop at Shrimpers Seafood Market on Hwy 98, just west of Hwy 395 (which goes directly to Gulf Place.

Healthy food and organic produce at For The Health Of It in Blue Mountain Beach. There is a Publix just before Sandestin on 98 and one in Seagrove Beach on 395.

If any visitors are planning on visiting the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola (it's free and a good place to visit when it's raining) then make it a point to stop at THE best seafood market on the panhandle...JOE PATTIS' SEAFOOD MARKET

Make sure to take a cooler--they'll pack your order in ice.

AND decide what you want to buy before you take a number (from the red order number thingie) or risk pizzing off the locals while you hum-and-haw your way down the display.

i still take 'everything' with - not spending any of my limited time in some store doing something i can do up here - trying a big blue igloo 12v cooler 'fridge' next trip plugged into the truck for the veggies, sauces, breads and stuff i don't want to freeze or lay around soaking in a cooler full of ice - took it to the lake the other day and it did great, but one day at the lake is not 5 days at sea and i wonder about long term use melting the plug or something (it got pretty hot) - had to put a sealed container of ice in it to cool it down as well, but after that it kept the stuff cold, but not frozen, which is what i wanted

the little deep freeze from Lowe's is still absolutely the best for the jumbo shrimp rings and pre-cooked-at-home platters - runs on a 600watt ac/dc inverter plugged into the cigarette lighter hole

both will run off of one cigarette lighter plug so the juice drain must be fairly small

Thank you so much Shelly-The website is just what I was looking for when I asked about a site for Goatfeathers. I like to plan my menus ahead of time and have an idea of what is available. Also, what the cost is going to be. In other words-I am feeding a family of 5 and try to keep the cost down all the while enjoying that fresh Florida seafood that we don't have in North Mississippi.

I buy meat and fish at the beach. For seafood, we are partial to Shrimpers, because we like the family who owns it. But all the seafood markets named in this thread are good.

Produce is another story. The Publix stores in the 30-A area are inconsistent in quality and don't have much variety. Depending on the time of year, the produce stands along the highways coming into Florida have good fruit and veggies, but in mid-summer most of what they have is not locally grown (exceptions are melons and sweet corn) If you care about produce, bring some with you.

I buy staples at the beach, they're the same price as home and I don't have space in the car for them. I do bring grits. The local Publix only has instant--yuk! If you like fancier pasta than they sell at Publix, check out the Modica Market in Seaside, which is also the source for lots of other fancy, yummy stuff for a splurge.

Speaking of splurging, Larder (midway between Seaside and Rosemary)has fabulous special cheeses and meat.

All the local wine and liquor stores are good. Best prices on beer and wine at Publix and Walmart.

Happy cooking!

I agree with you on the inconsistency of produce @ Publix (by the way that would be my only criticism as I LOVE shopping there on vacation). Maybe it was just the time of year though (spring). But as Kurt mentioned earlier For The Health of It in BMB is a great place for some nice organic produce especially the salad greens. :clap_1: I stayed at Adagio in April and the store is right next door and we really enjoyed shopping there. My mom is an organic food nut so she really appreciated it.

FYI - WLD is correct about the selection of produce in the smaller Publix at WaterColor. Currently, the selection is fairly good compared to the rest of the off season, however if you go on Sat or Sun (check in and grocery grabbing days) expect limited selection and availability on chips, bread, milk, eggs, and sometimes beer. On Sat and Sun, the store is jammed packed and people block the isles with their carts. It can get rather frustrating. If you can wait until Mon to shop, you will be better off. ;-)
