Established in 1993 as an artist-in-residency, Escape to Create has evolved from an established program to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization. E2C is supported by a vibrant community that celebrates artistic endeavor through residencies, concerts, literary conferences, theatrical events, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and educational outreach throughout the year.

Escape to Create welcomes five artists for the January 2011 residency. (January 3 ? 30).

? Frederick Brown ? painter
Frederick J. Brown is one of America?s most prolific expressionist artists. Throughout a career spanning forty years, Brown has explored a wide range of subjects and themes that chronicle the American experience in his distinctive style. His portraits of memorable jazz and blues artists are celebrated for their emotional and physical intensity. Brown has exhibited and taught in the U.S., Europe and China. His paintings are included in permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, and the White House. While in Seaside, Brown will complete a series of portraits that honors the musical and cultural contributions of jazz icons. Often described as a natural storyteller, Brown hopes to connect with the community through informal talks.

? Roger Freeman ? photographer
Utilizing traditional darkroom techniques, photographer Roger Freeman captures the essential beauty of his subjects in images that impart a sense of wonder. His architectural and interiors studies reveal a sense of order and beauty found in the commonplace and reflected in our culture. A professor of photography at Alfred University, Alfred, NY, Freeman?s work has been widely exhibited and is included in the permanent collections of the MFA/Houston, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France. Freeman?s residency project, a photographic essay on architecture, space and community, will be exhibited and eventually archived in the International Museum of Photography and Film, George Eastman House in Rochester, NY.

? Judith G. Levy ? visual artist
Visual artist Judith Levy?s multidisciplinary projects examine how we behave and how we understand the past. Her monumental ?Memory Cloud? installation, commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, used found snapshots suspended in plastic viewers to retrieve individual memories and create a collective experience. Her ?Panoramic Postcards,? on display at City Center Square in Kansas City, questions the morality of collective action in collages of historical events juxtaposed across time. While in Seaside, Levy will continue working on fictional interview series of ?The Last Descendants? and develop the conceptual design for her next installation piece. Levy will visit with area art students and will show films of her interviews with the last surviving family members of famous people and discuss their family history and family genealogical trees.

? Carmel Mikol ? song/screenwriter
Canadian singer/songwriter Carmel Mikol?s lyrical folk-rock sensibility and engaging lyrics have quickly gained her international recognition as a skilled songwriter and engaging performer. Her 2009 single ?Blaming Myself? hit #1 on the East Coast Count Down and the title track of her critically acclaimed 2010 album ?In My Bones? was awarded First Place in the Great American Song Contest Folk Category. During her residency, Mikol will develop the script, score and lyrics for a short film exploring themes of loss, grief and family bonds. She will also return as featured artist in the second annual 30A Songwriters Festival and will visit with area schools.

? Dhiru Thadani ? architect and author
Architect and author Dhiru Thadani is a leading expert in the design of sustainable, new urban?based development. He has won national recognition for his work in residential, university and community design and lectures at conferences around the world. Thadani has edited or contributed to numerous publications with leading practitioners in the fields of architecture and planning. His most recent book, The Language of Towns and Cities: A Visual Dictionary, won praise as a landmark work for its broad appeal and richly detailed illustrations. During his residency, Thadani will create the storyboard for his next writing project based on his 25-year collection of sketches, drawings, and cartoons. He will offer public lectures and is the 2011 recipient of the Seaside Prize (from Seaside Institute).
