Expanded creative programming offers new performing art sessions designed for thespians of all abilities from tots to teens … and beyond

Whether your thespian craves the glow of a center stage spotlight or prefers to make the magic happen backstage behind-the-scenes, Emerald Coast Theatre Company’s 2019 Summer Camp series has something to offer you.

ECTC, a local professional non-profit theater company, is proud to announce it has expanded its educational theater series for summer 2019 to include camps, classes and workshops that range from sessions on advanced audition techniques and improv “boot camp” to fully staged productions of popular Disney musical blockbusters, Broadway tune showcases, hands-on Oscar-worthy film camp and much more.

Classes for the 2019 will begin June 3 run through August 2, and will be offered for preschool aged children through twelfth grade high schoolers, with one new offering open to all adults, too. ECTC will offer nine different camps and workshops divided by age group. Most of the camps will end with a final performance for parents and friends to enjoy.

Most summer theater camps will be held at ECTC’s performance space located at 650 Grand Boulevard, upstairs, in Grand Boulevard at Sandestin in Miramar Beach, but several are also offered in Panama City and Seaside.

“This will be our seventh year of offering summer camps to the children of the Emerald Coast,” said Nathanael Fisher, producing artistic director of ECTC. “Since we founded 1,900 local children have participated in our educational programs, and 17,500 students and families have experience ECTC's Theatre for Young Audiences productions. It is near and dear to our mission to provide these opportunities to our community and we’re so excited to be able to offer some new creative programs in this year’s line-up.”

Little Rascals Camp encourages children ages 4 to 6 to begin exploring the world of theater through acting, singing and movement. Four different week-long themed-camps are offered in June and July at ECTC’s performance space in Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. The offerings are June 3-7, “Neverland;” June 10-14, “Island Adventure;” June 17-21 “The AristoCats,” and July 29-Aug. 2, “Story Book.” Tuition is $130 per person.

ECTC also offers a one-week, non-musical version of “Wizard of Oz” production camp for children entering grades 2 through 8. Put on your ruby slippers and click your heels three times to join in the fun. This camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with extended drop off/pick up available at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 3-7 at ECTC in Grand Boulevard and June 24-28 at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City. Tuition is $175 per person.

Camp Showtime is a week-long camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children grades 2 through 8 and focuses on Broadway music and choreography from popular musical numbers as well as theater games, improvisation and watching classic musicals on film. Let the rhythm get you as you act, sing and dance your heart out to popular Broadway numbers. Extended drop off/pick up at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. is available. Two offerings of ECTC's two-week musical, Disney’s “Frozen Jr.” for children in grades 3 through 8, will be offered. This intensive two-week camp gives ECTC instructors time with your young thespians to train them even more with stage presence, acting techniques, and theater games. The schedule is Monday through Friday for two weeks (skipping Saturday and Sunday) with a final performance the Friday evening and Saturday morning of the last week of camp. The classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours available at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Sessions are June 17-28, ECTC in Grand Boulevard, Miramar Beach and July 15-26, Gulf Coast State College, Panama City. New this year, ECTC offers a Film Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students in grades 2 through 8. Students will learn to write, direct and act during the process of creating a one-minute film. This fun, fast-paced class is perfect for both aspiring filmmakers or anyone who loves a good movie. The week ends with an Oscar-style ceremony and a screening of everything’s masterpiece. Techies Rule is for 5th through 12th graders and gives thespians a hands-on experience with set building, set painting, prop making, stage management and costume construction. A great introduction to all the behind the scenes magic that goes into producing a show. Work alongside ECTC’s technical director, stage manager and costume designer as you learn about everything that happens backstage. Campers will assist with the technical elements of Disney’s “Frozen Jr.” or “Godspell Jr.” camps. Sessions are at ECTC’s performance space in Grand Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24-29 and July 29-August 2. Tuition is $150 per person.

Improv Boot Camp is for 5th through 12th graders. During this three-day intensive workshop, students will be guided through a structured series of high-energy improv games designed to endow participants with skills and confidence to explore their own creativity and foster collaboration with their fellow actors to create spontaneous scenarios. Say "yes and" and see what happens next. Sessions are June 21, 5-9 p.m., June 22, noon-6 p.m. and June 23, 1-6 p.m. at ECTC in Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. Tuition is $100 per person.

Also new this year is a workshop on Acting Audition Techniques for thespians from grade 3 up to adult. This audition workshop, taught by actor/theater teacher Darla Briganti, focuses on refining your theatrical auditions. Three types of auditions will be explored: prepared material, cold reads, and improvised scenarios. You will learn audition “dos” and “don’ts,” techniques to help you shine in your audition, and how to take a risk and put yourself out there.
