The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center will host a free public speaker series in honor of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict the United States has ever waged in terms of American lives lost. It remains one of the most important historical events in the history of the United States and changed the country forever.

The next upcoming lecture will feature Dr. Derek Zumbro on February 16th, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Dr. Zumbro?s talk is titled ?Civil War Battlefield Photography? and will be held inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum.

Dr. Derek Zumbro received his Ph.D. in History from Louisiana State University. His specialties include Europe since 1500, Modern Germany, and Military History. Currently, Dr. Zumbro holds the position of Military History Coordinator at the University of West Florida and teaches a series of courses on military history. As a former Navy SEAL, Dr. Zumbro brings a unique perspective to military history.

This speaker series was made possible through the partnership of Heritage Park and Cultural Center, Florida Public Archaeology Network, National Park Service and the University of West Florida.

Civil War Sesquicentennial Speaker Series

Indian Temple Mound Museum Lazarus Education CenterThe City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center will host a free public speaker series in honor of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict the United States has ever waged in terms of American lives lost. It remains one of the most important historical events in the history of the United States and changed the country forever. This program is titled ?Civil War Sesquicentennial Speaker Series? and consists of local historians and archaeologists who will give talks on different Civil War topics, beginning in January 2011 and running through the summer. Lectures will be held at different times and days throughout the spring of 2011 inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum Lazarus Education Center.
The speaker schedule in the series will be as follows:

Jan. 14th, 6:00 PM: Dr. Brian Rucker, ?Beard?s Raid?

Feb. 16th, 1:00 PM: Dr. Derek Zumbro, "Civil War Battlefield Photography?

March 4th, 1:00 PM: Dale Cox, "Asboth?s 1864 Northwest Florida Raid"

March 12th, 1:00 PM: Dr. Matthew Clavin, ?The American Civil War: The Promise and Peril of a Second Haitian Revolution?

April 2nd, 1:00 PM: Brian Mabelitini, ?Archaeology of Hammock Landing Battery and the Confederate Fortifications at Apalachicola?

May 7th, 1:00 PM: Dr. Richard Lewis, ?Women and Slavery?

June 11th, 1:00 PM: David Ogden, ?Pensacola Forts and the Civil War?
