The Walton County Heritage Museum will feature tours of this L&N Caboose on July 4th between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are travelling to or from Walton County or SoWal, or just looking for a unique experience on July 4th, stop by this unique event on Circle Drive in Historic DeFuniak Springs. The museum will be open. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated for this 501c3 volunteer run facility. Special historic books will be on sale in the museum. Catch the parade in DeFuniak Springs in the afternoon. See more about this caboose and Walton County and Florida history on my blog -- Brenda Rees -- Shaping Florida.

Are the tours only July 4th or are there some on other days as well? I'd love to take my kids to see this but work on the 4th. I couldn't find anything on the Museum web site about it. Thanks!!

Everyone should support this effort! As a carpetbaggeger who has moved into the area 4 years ago, and thought that Walton County WAS 30A, I had no idea of all the fascinating and beautifully rich heritage that exist in Walton County.

Brenda Ress has been a tireless volunteer of preservation of both artifacts and history, right here in and Walton County. She is a talented writer/blogger who has made History in Walton County come truly alive. I have learned much.

If you are on a lengthy visit here,or if it rains on your beach day, or is too HOT for the beach or Silver Sands, then educate your whole family and learn about ther traditions and history of our local area!! Get involved!

 Mo2K -- The Walton County Heritage Museum is open Wednesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 1140 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs. 850-951-2127. The "Caboose Tours" is a special 4th of July event the volunteers provide for the community. We'll try to plan another day for the caboose to be open when you can come. The museum only has one part-time worker and all the rest is fielded by volunteers as their time permits. Look for a volunteer training day in a month or two. Additional information and pictures are available on my SoWal blog. Children enjoy the Train Depot next to the Caboose during our regular hours. We have several videos one can watch. The Coastal Dune Lakes, a 28 minute video on the historic homes around Circle Drive, and the new South Walton TDC Walton County History DVD. The train even comes by the depot from time to time adding a historic realism touch to the experience. We've just added Alline Smith's 1902 Christening gown. Alline, and her husband Tuff Smith, built the "Smith" house in Grayton Beach. They were also residents of DeFuniak Springs and part of the historic "Smith Dairy" family.
