They call it a harvest, should big game hunting be allowed in Florida? In the US? Why is it OK here and not in Africa? And what about big game fish?

Bear harvest permit applications open Sept. 12

Bear harvest permit applications for the 2025 regulated bear hunting season will open at 10 a.m. EDT on Sept. 12 and can be submitted through Sept. 22 at 11:59 p.m. A bear harvest permit is required to harvest a bear in one of the four selected Bear Harvest Zones from Dec. 6-28. A hunting license is also required to hunt bears, unless exempt.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by Oct. 1 to apply and may apply as many times as they want for $5 per application, plus handling fees. Permits will be distributed by random drawing. Only one nontransferable permit may be issued per person, and permits will cost $100 for residents and $300 for nonresidents, plus handling fees. No more than 10% of all permits issued will be to nonresidents.

I'm not necessarily a fan. But at the FWC Commissioners meeting...

After more than 2 ½ hours of public testimony, nearly evenly divided between proponents and opponents, commissioners voted 5–0 to reinstate the hunting season in hopes of slowing the growth of the state's bear population. USA Today

...apparently others feel differently.

Where is bear hunting being proposed in Florida?

The plan is to issue 187 permits to harvest black bears from 31 counties divided into four bear management areas. The hunting zones would exist in areas where the bear population exceeds 200.

Sixty-eight bears will be permitted for harvest from 11 eastern panhandle counties, including Franklin, Leon and Wakulla; 18 bears from 12 Central Florida counties; 46 from five North Florida counties; and 55 from Lee, Collier and Hendry counties.

I'd imagine cars and other encounters with humans keep the population in check.

Correct. Interesting stats....

Black bears killed each year in Florida

Between 2005 and 2024, 5,967 bears were killed statewide by either on roads, by management, illegal harvest, or other causes of death.

Hopefully I’ll be reading about the 2 or 3 hunters who have fatal “ accidents “ while out killing bear.
