I would like to know if anyone here has experience dealing with assisted living facilities in this area. I know someone who is beginning to look into it and would like to hear a few thoughts/ reccomendations. Thanks!

I do not know of any facilities in this area, but we just finished going through this with my grandmother.

One biggie is to start looking before you need it and to get on waiting lists. The good places all have waits and you don't want to end up somewhere just because it was the only opening.

Some factors in the decision:

- Available levels of independence and medical care - once you finally get them settled, you don't want to have to move them again if they need a different level of care and there could be a waiting list if you need to change suddenly. (For example, Grandma lives in an apartment that has a group dining room downstairs that serves dinner only. If she has more medical issues she can change to assisted living or eventually hospice care, but they don't provide full assistance like someone completely bedridden would need.)

- Whether they currently have friends in the facility or nearby.

- Whether or not pets are allowed to live there. Some places will allow pets, but only in certain wings or areas. If they DO have to give up their pet, bring it to visit often. (and bring your pets to visit them too)

- Is the place already furnished or do they get to decorate it & bring their own furniture.

- Is is close to things, what transportation options are available.
