Archaeology kids! Museum summer camp

Get ready for fun! “Archaeology Kids: Museum Summer Camp” is just around the corner at the Indian Temple Mound Museum. The camp will be offered July 9 to July 13 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Campers will experience 12,000 years of history in a fun-filled week. Children will explore archaeology in a museum setting and visit real archaeological sites. They will learn about early Native Americans and the archaeology used to uncover their way of life as they explore a mock on-site archaeological excavation, analyze their findings and create a museum display which will be on display all summer. Each day children will learn about the past, about archaeology, museums, artifacts and make a take home project. There will be camp supplies, a snack to enjoy and art/science activities in which to participate.

  • Day 1: Digging Into the Past. Campers will experience a mock excavation and field archaeology.
  • Day 2: Partners with the Past. Campers will learn about early Native American life as they analyze artifacts and create a museum exhibit.
  • Day 3: Bringing the Past to Life. Campers will learn about Historic Archaeology as they travel to local archaeological sites.
  • Day 4: Wet Wonders. Campers will experience many of the aspects of Underwater Archaeology.
  • Day 5: The Solution to History. Campers will experience Forensic Archaeology as they use what they have learned to solve a history-based crime.

The camp fee is $100 per camper for all five mornings with all snacks and materials included. Students going into the 3rd through 6th grades are welcome. Advance registration is required and forms are available at the Indian Temple Mound Museum. The museum is located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, in downtown Fort Walton Beach. Call Gail Lynn Meyer at the City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center, 833-9595, to reserve your place in the camp.
