2014 Toyota Tundra Debuts at Chicago Auto Show
Redesigned for even more functionality
The 2014 Toyota Tundra has gotten a makeover, and after seeing the truck show off its new look at the Chicago Auto Show, it’s safe to say that everyone liked what they saw.
This redesign was inspired by customer feedback requesting a more chiseled exterior and refined interior, and the Toyota team decided to put a focus on what customers would want, in addition to what they need.
Assembled exclusively in San Antonio, TX, the Tundra will feature five grades, the SR, SR5, Limited, and two premium grades, the Platinum and 1794 Edition. There will also be three cab styles available, the two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab, and four-door CrewMax – all available in 4x2 and 4x4.
Outside, the all-new front design features a chiseled and modern integrated hood and grille. The chrome grille is taller, and connects the upper intake to the lower bumper for a bolder look. The front lower bumpers now feature a three-piece design, which makes for better grade differentiation and less expensive replacement parts. The fender and wheel wells exhibit a wider and sturdier stance, thanks to their new squared-off body.
There’s also an all-new bed design that extends the chiseled and rugged look to the end of the vehicle. There’s an integrated spoiler, and “TUNDRA” is stamped into the sheet metal for a forged look. The rear bumper has also changed from one piece to three.
The Tundra’s cabin has been re-worked for a spacious and versatile interior. Unique styling has been given to each grade for a special identity. Across the line, ergonomic improvements include easier driver access to audio and HVAC controls.
Large knobs are retained for operation with or without work gloves. There’s an all-new front and rear CrewMax seat design, including the ability to fold up for additional cargo carrying capability. The instrument panel is all-new and features 3-D metallic rings and individual gauges grouped around a multi-information display screen. The console area has multiple storage areas and premium grades will features padded surfaces and accent stitching.
The identity attributed to the SR5’s interior is “professional gear,” and features unique drive and passenger zones covered in metallic accents and bold contrasting fabric. Premium surface treatments have been utilized for maximum quality and durability. The Limited grade has an “active premium” image, highlighted by leather seating surfaces, matched by soft-touch stitched door and console surfaces, along with wood-style interior trims.
The Platinum grade interior is geared toward personal use truckers, and features perforated black leather-trimmed seats with double-stitched diamond plate leather. There are also door and instrument panel inserts, chrome seat and console accent badging. The Platinum grade has premium leather never before used on a Toyota truck, and has standard amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, and Blind Spot Monitor. And last but not least, the 1794 Edition has a western lifestyle theme and comes with exclusive saddle-brown leather seating with embossed leather and suede accents. Matching soft-touch materials have been added to the shift console, front and rear door trim, and the instrument panel.
The engines from the previous Tundra lineup make another appearance for 2014. A 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower 278-pound-feet of torque V6 is still the base engine. Two V8s – a 310-hp, 327-lb-ft 4.6-liter and a 381-hp, 401-lb-ft 5.7-liter are also available. The V6 is paired to a five-speed automatic transmission, while both V8s make use of six gears.
